Rainshadow Disc Golf
After days and days of rain and dark wintery skies, the sun finally broke out. I took this rare opportunity for a much needed hike in the sun.
My friend and I, along with my dog, Hani, decided on the disc golf on the Olympic Peninsula in Sequim, Washington. I have heard and read about it but have never visited the golf course. It’s only a short drive away from home and we thought we should give it a try.
We first stopped by 7 Cedars Casino for a very nice breakfast. Honestly, all good outings need to begin or end with good food. This was Sunday morning. There were a few people at the slot machines and a few people at the restaurant. We got very pleasant service at the quiet restaurant. My friend ordered a very healthy looking avocado toast breakfast and I ordered biscuits and gravy with two fried eggs (of course!) Both our meals were very yummy and I had to take a big box of leftovers with me.
The golf course was only a few minutes from the casino. First, we were treated to a relaxing view of Sequim Bay on Old Blyn Highway. Then, we drove through the lush green highway. Before we knew it, we arrived.
We had no idea what to expect and made sure we took a picture of the disc golf map at the parking lot.
The first hole had a beautiful view of Sequim Bay. We paused to admire the view. My dog saw the frisbees in our hands and immediately went berserk. I had to use both hands to hold her back. (Leashes are required for dogs at the park.)
For the most part, we were all alone. We could hear other players laughing and having fun but we never ran into them.
We are both novices at playing disc golf but managed to have a lot of fun and achieved some small successes. (To me, success at this is defined as being able to make the baskets from 5 feet away.) The walk from one hole to the next was wonderful. It was actually a hike up and down some windy hills. We got our winter-cooped up bodies a good workout. Some of the holes were clearly marked while others made us scratch our heads. Nevertheless, we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the much needed exercise in the sun.
We played disc golf for 9 holes and then walked through the rest of the holes.
It was altogether a great day of hiking and soaking up sunshine.
Hani and I enjoyed a wonderful, world class nap afterwards.
